By TOM RYAN Associated Press WriterWASHINGTON — A cat that can sniff out a human’s scent can be a useful tool in crime investigations, police say.
A woman found dead in a New Jersey attic was killed by a fox that could sense human scent, authorities said.
Authorities said a police investigation found a fox found dead inside the attic of a New York apartment complex killed the woman by a blow to the head with a baton, according to a news release from the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office.
The woman was found unconscious and dead Thursday at the apartment complex where the man was staying, the Cumberlands Times Union reported.
The man, who was not named in the report, was charged with first-degree murder and other related crimes in the death.
The fox that killed the man, the prosecutor’s office said, was the same one that killed another person, according a news report.
The discovery was made Thursday morning, but it was not immediately clear how the fox killed the victim, the report said.
Foxes have been widely used in the detection of odors in the past.
The fox is capable of detecting human scent by scent and can follow the scent with the assistance of a special infrared camera that detects the light emitted by human skin.
