JERSEY CITY, N.J. — A 16-year-old girl found hanging from her mother’s closet in their Jersey City home died of her injuries, authorities said Wednesday.
Jersey City police identified the girl as Elizabeth A. Rios, and her family identified her as her mother, Rosa, who is serving time in federal prison.
Rios, who was last seen in a blue hoodie on Jan. 6, was pronounced dead on the floor of her home at the time of her death, authorities told NJ Advance Media.
The girl’s mother was arrested Monday in New Jersey, and the two were arrested Wednesday.
Investigators say the girl’s body was found hanging by a bed in the family’s living room, according to police.
Neighbors told the newspaper they were told by neighbors that the girl was suicidal, but they said they didn’t know how the girl had ended up in the closet.
Investigators say Rios had been depressed and struggled with drug addiction, and had recently turned to smoking marijuana to relieve the effects of her addiction.
